You may qualify if you:

  • Are 60 years or older
  • Are a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee
  • Live in South Africa full-time
  • Are not receiving another government social grant
  • Are not cared for in a state institution (e.g., government old-age home)
  • Meet the SASSA Means Test

📌 Means Test Requirements

The means test checks your income and assets:

  • Single applicants: Income must be less than R102,000 per year
  • Married couples: Combined income must be less than R204,000 per year
  • Assets limit: R1,372,800 (single) or R2,745,600 (married)

If you already receive a private pension, it may reduce the amount SASSA pays.


💰 How Much Is the Older Persons Grant?

As of 2025, the monthly payment is:

  • R2,180 per month — Age 60 to 74
  • R2,200 per month — Age 75 and older

Grant amounts may increase again in the next National Budget review.
